Dortmund Sparkassen Has Ended – Caruana Victorious
After nine thrilling rounds, the Dortmund Sparkassen tournament has ended on Sunday. There was a lot of draws, although no draw offers were permitted, as every draw had to be a decision of arbiters or a consequence of a threefold repetition.
Most interestinlgy, round 7 ended in 5 draws. After the eigth round, there still were 5 players at the top of the standing table, all gaining 5 points. The ninth round left two chess players tie-breaked with 6 points and the absolute winner had to be chosen according to additional criteria.
BothFabiano Caruana and Sergey Karjakin played the same number of games as black, but Caruana had more wins in total. Thus, he was declared the winner of the whole tournament.
