Even Grandmaster Markos Sometimes Gives Himself up to a Mate

Making a move and susequently getting an unexpected mate is not very pleasant. It might seem that only beginners are specialists in overlooking one-move mates, but even regulars players get sightless sometimes, missing a one-move defeat.

Not only Kramnik, who lost to Deep Fritz 10 in 2006 after failing a simple Queen’s mate could speak about this. Recently, specifically in the last week’s online simultaneous exhibition at ChessFriends.com, Jan Markos have delighted a german player Old48 by granting him a one-move victory.

In this regard, mentioning GM Nigel Short seems almost inevitable. Lately, it seems that he finds pleasure in having been shown mates. At the ongoing European Team Championship, he did not resign a move before mate, forcing Greek Mastrovasilis to end the game by mate. Remarkable.

The course of accidents mentioned above:

This piece of writing is not primarily aimed at drawing amusement from grandmasters. It would rather like to leave the following message: While recieving a one-move mate, we can, not being grandmasters, comfort ourselves by thinking: There are worse things than overlooking a mate. One of them is being a grandmaster and overlooking a mate.
