Why Did ChessFriends.com Introduce Paid Membership?

Over the last five years, ChessFriends.com have been constantly updated, improved and developed. It demanded full-time effort by a team of dedicated individuals, who have chosen to do what they love and provide the results to fellow chess players all over the world. We love to generate interesting content; we love to provide services as good as possible.

We currently combine advanced offline and online gaming, broadcasts from the most interesting chess events, educational and training videos and articles, as well as localisation into many languages, which makes us unique among chess websites. We also offer interesting tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions against famous grandmasters.

We are always trying to bring something new and interesting. You may remember the Play against Kasparov simul, the winner of which actually played in a live simultaneous exhibition against famous Garry Kasparov. Currently, we are working on even more appealing tournaments with very attractive prizes.

Unfortunately, the development has been very expensive and there is an immense list of items that have to be paid for. The list includes server hosting and storage, hardware and software background and various support services. The website is translated into 14 languages and every language requires constant maintenance to keep up with the continual development of the entire website. The tech support works very hard to assist you efficiently and timely, even during nighttime and weekends.

We are not a website developed by enthusiasts during long winter evenings, only to dump the project as soon as the spring starts. We are professionals, who work hard to stay consistent with their effort, investing both their working and personal time into chess. There are also external contributors – article authors, video presenters, camera and sound operators, editors and other devoted people.

Our work is not yet finished. There still is a lot to improve and develop and we would like to make this website as good as possible. To continue with our efforts and fund the development, we have to induce certain fees. Nothing you ever get is for free, everything has its cost and there is always somebody to pay. We want to stay honest and fair and do not wish to deceive you. Thus, we started to offer paid membership, which will bring you some benefits over the free account. If you have liked our services and want them to further improve, you may consider buying a Premium or Exclusive account.

Those who cannot or choose not to support us financially should not be worried. Parts of ChessFriends.com will always be free. Free accounts can still play up to 50 rated games per month, while the number of unrated games stays unlimited.

(The discussion was canceled due to improper behavior of participants.)
