From Old Hollywood

90 years ago, in 1921, the actor Douglas Fairbanks and famous Charlie Chaplin had plenty of free time during movie productions because of technical reasons. They enjoyed this free time over chess games. There is an interesting picture from this year, showing a chess board with Douglas Fairbanks sitting on the left, Charlie Chaplin on the right and in the middle, watching, 10 years old Samuel Reshewski, chess miracle, who became a grand master and champion of United States.

Reshewski was born on 11/26/1911 in Poland. He was called a miracle child, who since the age of 8, played simultaneous exhibitions and organized productions in mathematics. I am persuaded, that his success after arriving to USA at the beginning of the twenties of the 20. century was due to time spent with Charlie Chaplin. See by yourself, what the old Hollywood annals say:

One day Fairbanks paid a visit to Chaplin. Chaplin’s maid answered the door:
“Come in, Mr. Chaplin is in his room.”
Douglas Fairbanks froze after opening the door: his friend was sitting over a chess board, playing against his dog! The dog was just moving a piece with his paw! Stunned visitor turned slowly toward Chaplin and whispered:
“Listen, that is a smart dog, isn’t it?”
Chaplin moved his hand with refusal:
“Well, yes, and I just beat him.”
