In the year 1978, future GM Nigel Short, was 12 years old. In an interview for Sunday Times, he said, that he intends to become the World Champion in 3 to 5 years.
About for years had passed from the interview, when the same reporter decided to check on Englishman’s progress with his goal. “So how do you rate your results regarding your stated goal?” he asked Short. “I see a clear progress”, Nigel replied. “Such artsy statements as the ones I used to let out of my mouth some four years ago, are nowadays very rare with me.”
