A Secret Weapon

During the world championship match between Emanuel Lasker and Wilhelm Steinitz, a fan of Lasker gave him a gift – a box of cigars. After the match, which Lasker won and became the new World Champion, the fan sought him out again. He congratulated Lasker and said: “Hopefully, the box of cigars I gave you helped with winning the match?!”

Of course he meant it as a joke, but nevertheless he was curious if Lasker was pleased with the gift and maybe it did help him a bit after all.

“Of course, they indeed did help me win the match”, replied Lasker.

“So you’ve enjoyed them, then?” asked the giver, wanting to hear more praise on his gift.

“No, no, I smoked another brand”, said Lasker, “these I gave to Steinitz.”

chess @Zergrushing chess is a very complex game with many feacts. the goal of this video was to explain some ideas about building an attack against your opponent’s castled king, and the two bishop sacrifice. to explain how to win with an extra queen is the subject for a different video, which i can do if you are interested. btw very few chess games end in checkmate: players will usually resign when they are behind significant material, as in the final position of this game.
