Grand Slam Moves Towards Bilbao

The Grand Slam we have reported on lately has moved on from Sao Paolo, Brazil towards the second leg in Bilbao, Spain. Ukrainian player Vasili Ivanchuck was leading with 10 points, with Hikaru Nakamura’s at the second spot with 7 points. Viswanathan Anand, Levon Aronian and Magnus Carlsen were tied at six points. Francisco Vallejo occupied the last place with three points from victory over current leader of FIDE ladder, Magnus Carlsen.

At the opening ceremonial, players were asked questions about new rules regarding point system. The video by Vijay Kumar for from the pre-tournament conference could be seen here:

In the first round in Bilbao, Ivanchuck beat Nakamura, thus gaining 3 points, Carlsen tied with Anand, as did Vallejo and Aronian. The most recent score is thus 13 points for Ivanchuck, 7 for Nakamura, Carlsen, Anand and Aronian. Vallejo still sits at the rear, with 3 points and no realistic hope to win the tournament.

Extensive information could be found at the tournamet’s official page.
