Chess event of decade
The biggest chess event since 1993 has begun on 22th May in hotel Kultura in the Ruzomberok town square. More than 20 chess grandmasters met in one place. The participation of 80 chess players with titles made the event Mitropa Cup the strongest tournament in its 33rd year history.
It also started two days lasting Slovak Rapid Chess Championship on Friday with Slovak top players participation which were won by Slovak grandmaster Mikulas Manik. The second place was taken by big young talent from Zilina Jergus Pechac. The third was Vladimir Jacko jr. The Slovak women champion became Andrea Briestenska.
The organizers prepared nice event also for non-chess public named Human Chess in Friday evening, which was played blindfolded by two talented young players Juraj Druska and Stefan Mazur. The game was ended in a draw in 55 moves. Each move was performed on the giant chess board and their moves were made by costumed chess players and swordmen. The big ten minutes lasting firework followed the performance.
There was another acompanying event organised in honour of Liptov´s chess legend Dusan Pecner on Sunday, which is the Blitz Chess Tournament where the winner also became GM Mikulas Manik. The Slovak Blitz Chess Championship for physicaly disabled chess players were organized for the first time in history which was won by Juraj Zavarsky.
Mitropa itself awaits 5 more chess days, in which players will play not only for the Mitropa Cup trophies but it is mainly a preparation for upcoming Chess Olympiad which takes place in Norway in a month and half.
The event was also visited by the first guest, current olympic winner for the Armenian team Sergey Movsesian who will open a chess playground in one of the local kindergarden in Ruzomberok. Many delegates from participating countries will arrive on May 29th 2014 for the upcoming meeting for the Mitropa Cup. A special guest in this congress shall be Zurab Azmaiparasvili, the former secondant of legendary Garry Kasparov, Europian Individual Champion, multiple representant of Georgia and candidate for the president of the Europian Chess Union who will represent Garry Kasparov´s voting programme and his candidature for the Fide president.
All chess games from the event are online broadcasted. The transmission is followed in average by 20 000 people from 73 countries.
The current leader of the Open section is French team and the woman section is led by Italians.
The event is organised by Ruzomberok Chess Club under the supervising of the tournament director Marek Zelnicky and the chief arbiter Ivan Syrovy thanks to the contribution of the Slovak Chess Federation, the town of Ruzomberok, Kia Motors Slovakia foundation in Pontis Foundation and other partners.
